Demystifying the CAT Exam

The CAT is one of the most important competitive exams in India. Many students who aspire to make a career in Management, look up to this exam. Many students appear for this exam hoping to get admission into one of the IIMs. So it becomes important for a student to get acquainted with the exam pattern, syllabus and the reason for a student to appear in the exam.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of the most prestigious and competitive entrance exams in India. It is conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The CAT exam serves as a gateway to premier business schools and management programs across the country. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the CAT exam. It includes its structure, qualification criteria, syllabus, and preparation strategies.

Structure of the CAT Exam:

Sections:

The CAT exam consists of the following three sections:

  1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC): This section evaluates candidates’ English language proficiency, comprehension skills, and ability to analyse written passages. The question may be asked regarding antonyms and synonyms, word meanings, reading comprehension etc.
  2. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI & LR): This section assesses candidates’ logical reasoning and analytical skills through data interpretation and logical reasoning-based questions. The questions include reasoning questions, questions based on the data provided in the paper etc.
  3. Quantitative Ability (QA): This section tests candidates’ mathematical and quantitative aptitude. Mathematical questions relating to matriculation syllabus are asked generally.

Mode and Duration:

  • The CAT exam is a computer-based test (CBT) conducted in multiple sessions.
  • Each section is timed separately, and candidates are not allowed to switch between sections during the test.
  • The total duration of the exam is 180 minutes (3 hours), with 60 minutes allotted for each section.

Qualification Criteria:

  1. Educational Qualification: Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum aggregate percentage (usually 50% for general category) from a recognized university or institution. Students who are in the final year of their graduation and are awaiting their results are also eligible to apply.
  2. Age Limit: There is no specific age limit for appearing in the CAT exam.
  3. Reservation and Eligibility: Reservation policies apply to candidates belonging to scheduled castes (SC), scheduled tribes (ST), other backward classes (OBC), and economically weaker sections (EWS) as per government regulations. The percentage of seats provided to these are 15%, 7.5%, 27% and 10% to SC, ST, OBC and EWS respectively.

Syllabus of the CAT Exam:

1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC):

  • Reading Comprehension passages with questions
  • Sentence Correction and Completion
  • Para-jumbles and Paragraph Summary
  • Vocabulary-based questions (synonyms, antonyms, analogies)

2. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI & LR):

  • Data Interpretation based on graphs, charts, and tables
  • Logical Reasoning involving puzzles, seating arrangement, blood relations, etc.
  • Data Sufficiency questions
  • Clocks, calendars, and cubes
  • Venn diagrams and binary logic

3. Quantitative Ability (QA):

  • Arithmetic topics (percentages, time and work, ratio and proportion, etc.)
  • Algebraic concepts (equations, inequalities, functions, etc.)
  • Geometry (lines, angles, triangles, circles, etc.)
  • Number System (divisibility, HCF, LCM, remainders, etc.)
  • Modern Math (probability, permutations and combinations, logarithms, etc.)

Preparation Strategies for the CAT Exam:

  1. Understand the Exam Pattern: You should familiarise yourself with the exam pattern, structure, and marking scheme. Alsoo, Analysing the  previous years’ question papers to identify trends and question types will significantly help in the exams.
  2. Create a Study Plan: Develop a well-structured study plan, allotting sufficient time for each section. Focus on strengthening your weak areas while maintaining regular practice in all sections. This will help you in studying in an organised way. Also, organising your study plans will help you in preparing for each of the sections properly.
  3. Comprehensive Study Material: Refer to reliable and comprehensive study material, including textbooks, online resources, and CAT preparation books. Recommended books by renowned authors can provide in-depth knowledge and practice questions. You can also choose to join coaching for the exam. Enrolling for coaching will help you study smartly. 
  4. Mock Tests and Practice: Regularly take mock tests and practice sample papers. This will help you to enhance your time management skills, speed, and accuracy. Analyse your performance, identify areas for improvement, and focus on test-taking strategies. You can get good feedback on your performance from your coaching centre. This will help you in working on your shortcomings.
  5. Develop Reading Habits: Cultivate a habit of reading newspapers, articles, and diverse reading materials to improve reading speed, comprehension skills, and vocabulary. Going through the preparation of CAT requires very exhaustive reading and long study sessions. Hence to make sure you can endure this exhaustive preparation, you should build a habit of reading.
  6. Time Management: Efficient time management is crucial during the CAT exam. Practice solving questions within time constraints to ensure you complete each section within the allocated time. Sitting through a simulated exam environment will significantly help you in building good time management. Hence, building time management skills is really necessary for going through the CAT exam.
  7. Solve Previous Years’ Papers: Solve and analyse previous years’ question papers to understand the exam pattern, difficulty level, and question types. This will familiarise you with the CAT exam and boost your confidence. Also, if you are able to score good in the previous year papers, it will give you a lot of confidence. This in turn, will be of great benefit while giving the exam.

Engage in regular exercise, meditation, and relaxation techniques to keep a balanced mindset. Stress is really bad for a student attempting an exam. A person under a large amount of stress will definitely fumble during exam and answer the questions wrongly. Also, a person under stress will be disorganised in studies, or will forget the things he/she studies.
